I'm an RN in Ontario, and I'm constantly studying ways to preserve Medicare in Canada. For a very long time, creating a two-tiered system has been discussed. I think it was considered by several interest groups, even when Tommy Douglas was implementing the first universal health care plan. Several questions arise from these debates; one, why consider another system if universal health care is good enough? Are there flaws in the system that some Canadians question its' utility and effectiveness? The last question raises my second question, also brought up in the video. Medicares' founders knew that implementing a universal plan would require significant measures of primary prevention, because of the massive costs to the public. After all it's not free, nothing is, and it's very expensive to receive good care! The issue of primary prevention is what fostered the development of the social determinants of health, as both a framework and a model for shaping all elements of human development and personal lives. My second question is this; are health experts forgetting that so much of one's health status is a result of their choices (e.g. food, substance use, exercise), despite the individual lacking very little of the determinants? I've seen hundreds of people who have decent incomes, homes, education, and basic necessities who deliberately choose unhealthy lifestyles, because they enjoy it. Aside from those who are in extreme poverty and victims of abuse, are we forgetting the necessity of having personal responsibility in our lives? The issues seems to me as being far more complex than any experts or bureaucrats can ever understand.

The Canadian Health Care System is not as great as it cracked up to be. I realize that when you are younger and in great health, you believe it works efficiently. As one ages and becomes more dependent on the system, there are a lot of treatments that are not covered by OHIP. I have to have a cyst removed from my face but OHIP does not cover that expense. I have also had to pay out of pocket for PSA blood work tests. It's dangerous to age in Canada because what Canada now offers as health care, is MAID. MAID is Medical Assistance In Dying, once doctors have made the decision that you have reached the end of life, they are going to be euthanized as a means of reducing cost to the system.

Great production. One can visualize from patient and staff perspectives. I was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. I worked in the medical field. I always enjoyed the psych component of my patients. My dad was a patient in Weyburn Mental Hospital for a few months in either 1959 or 1960. He never talked about it and has now passed on. Thank you for educating people. Well done.

Great piece of history! Wow

I wonder if the person who posted thus video series still checks the comments. I spent over 6 months on over a period of a year working in the institute in the late 70s. From what I have seen in the videos it seems quite apparent that the video was funded by government or a government arts program as it seems very tame compared to what had gone on there. Also, it was being closed down, but there were patients there on the upper floors that were quite severe, some were quite scary and somewhat dangerous. One of the orderlies that had worked there since the early 60s was still working there when I was working as a contractor installing high voltage cable, electrical trays and various switching and high voltage equipment that was to be used by Sask Power for training. The man's name was Taffy, a stocky man that shared many stories and showed me throughout the entire building where I saw solitary confinement cells and other areas where some of the events he told me about took place. There were many terrible things that went on there, everything from rapes, babies being born by mental patients, abortions, experiments with LSD and other psychedelics, brainwashing that were part of MK ultra. Brain surgeries, lobotomies, experimentation with electric shock therapy that was pushed beyond any humane use. Before I had ever been to there, I had read a story that was published in a popular Canadian (Maclean's I think it was) magazine about a man that was found there by a nurse that had just started working there. She recognized a man who she had known from the small town that she had grown up who had disappeared, it was uncovered that the RCMP had gone to his home because of a complaint from a neighbour claiming he was dangerous and threatened him. The RCMP discovered that he had several firearms which were not illegal and arrested him. There was more to the reason that the RCMP wanted silence and make him disappear him rather than charging him so he could defend himself in the courts, Instead, they took him to the Weyburn Mental institute and admitted him where he was given extensive electric shock therapy until he was "vegetablized". The man had been in the Weyburn Institution over 5 years before being recognized by chance! It would be a much more interesting documentary if other institutions such as the Residential Schools have been demolished to erase the Governments involvement in the atrocities committed out of the public view for decades.

May dad played in jam-sessions with vaMujuru and a few other friends back in the 70s... it fills me with pride!

I guess maybe this has some value to it but instead of being so deep and introspective and letting your imagination run wild with all kinds of horrors ( of which there were ). Look in the mirror because it was society that caused these massive institutions. It’s what society wanted because 1) they didn’t and still in some cases don’t know how to treat mental illness and 2) didn’t or couldn’t deal with the patients in the community. I just found out that my second Great grandfather was in this mental hospital in 1926 he died in 1940 and was buried in the hospital grounds.

This building and story has always fascinated me I’m very disappointed it was demolished before I could ever see it

Absolutely fascinating. The fact that they use two by fours on the flat. Where did the lumber come from? Obviously shipped in but it's interesting considering how flat those areas of Canada are they are not covered in Timberland but wheatfields.

My Parents had a little smaller 42 ft. Chris Craft Tri-Cabin. It was also all wood. Loved growing up on our boats over the years. They/we had 5 different boats over 25 years on Lake Michigan. I’m an older man these days but what great memories. Thanks and RIP Mom & Dad😘
